George and Betsy Crossley earned their B.S. and M.S. degrees from our department and have gone on to inspiring careers. George earned his M.D. from the Medical College of Georgia and went on Assistant and Associate Professor appointments at Wake Forest University School of Medicine. He then joined the Nashville practice that became St. Thomas Heart, where he served as president. George is now a Professor at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, serving as Director of the Electrophysiology lab and the Clinical Research Institute. He has mentored many Cardiac electrophysiology fellows and young faculty members. Betsy had research and instructional appointments after graduation, and took some time to raise their two sons. She then focused on giving back to the community, serving as a Planning Commissioner, City Commissioner and twice as Mayor of the City of Brentwood, TN. She was honored by the Congress of Cities as one of the Top Five Women in Municipal Government, and was named “Top Dawg” for her achievements by the Alumni Association of UGA. George and Betsy have been steadfast supporters of our department, with enthusiastic interest in our graduate students and their training. The purpose of the fund is to provide support for graduate student travel in the Department of Microbiology. Support shall include, but not limited to, awards, transportation, room and board, conference fees, and other related expenses as deemed appropriate. MIBO Graduate students are eligible for 1 award per academic year. Applications are considered on a rolling basis.
